Case #14

University of Borås, Sweden

The University of Borås expanded considerably during the years 1999 – 2003 and has of today approximately 11,000 students. Since the university has been restored and extended at several occasions, the outcome has been a mix of old and modern architecture in the different sections of the buildings. In one of the sections an atrium is to be found with large light emissions through glass several floors up. Apart from being a source of light, the atrium also functions as a meeting-place for students where they can take a break between classes; hang out, read and study. With the assistance of Fellert, the architect has created a sense of being in a backyard where the walls are beautifully white plastered. Since the walls are covered with acoustic plaster there are no sound distractions so it is easy for the students to concentrate, even though the room is full of other people.
